Zambia's banking and public sectors are deepening their connection to the country's digital agenda. Zanaco, one of Zambia's largest commercial banks, held discussions with the SMART Zambia Institute on 10 August 2026 to strengthen cooperation around digital infrastructure, innovation, and wider access to technology.
A Meeting Focused on Practical Progress
The talks centred on the concrete ways the private sector can support Zambia's digital transformation agenda. Rather than a symbolic gesture, the discussion was explicitly aimed at practical cooperation — leveraging the bank's scale, reach, and digital banking platforms to widen access to technology across the country.
The SMART Zambia Institute, which coordinates the Government's electronic services and digital transformation initiatives, brings the institutional framework and public service channels that such a partnership needs to deliver real impact.
Why This Partnership Matters
Partnerships between financial institutions and the Government's digital delivery arm are rarely about a single product. They are about infrastructure. Three things stand out from this meeting:
1. Digital infrastructure as a shared foundation. A modern digital economy needs reliable payment rails, secure identity systems, and interoperable platforms. Banks and the public sector both depend on this foundation — and both win when it is strengthened.
2. Innovation that reaches people, not just institutions. The goal of digital transformation is not technology for its own sake. It is making services — banking, government, education — accessible to more Zambians. A bank partnering with SMART Zambia is a signal that innovation is being measured by how far it reaches.
3. Wider access to technology. This was named explicitly in the discussion. Expanding access means more unbanked and under-served communities getting onto the formal digital economy — something that depends on both connectivity and digital skills.
